You might say, “I’m not depressed, but I feel like I’m floating in space,” or “I feel reluctant, like I’m aimless in life.” Do you say? Languishing may be the cause of your loss of interest.
So, what is Languishing?
Languishing, a term that has become widespread after the pandemic; It is a name given to the situation where a person feels bored, tired and lost in an unpleasant life. Languishing can be observed in anyone, male or female, regardless of gender. Individuals experiencing this situation find themselves in a situation where they are unable to evaluate the positive developments in their lives, cannot reveal their potential, and move away from their goals.
How do we identify individuals experiencing this syndrome?
• Reluctant towards life,
• Purposeless,
• Constantly postpones responsibilities that need to be done,
• We can define them as individuals with concentration disorders.
What are the reasons?
Before defining ‘Languishing’, we mentioned that it is a concept that has become widespread after the pandemic. The pandemic has actually been one of the most important events that triggered the ‘fight or flight’ response of individuals. Our biggest goals were to avoid contracting the epidemic, to protect our loved ones in this context, and to develop our own coping strategies in the face of the situation. In addition to our goals; The disruption of our business life, interactions and social life due to the pandemic have been signs of a spiritually exhausting process. As the pandemic ended in 2021, our strongest triggers ended and our brain began to experience a lack of motivation. Not being able to fully adapt to our ‘New Normal’ after the difficult process has left many of us with a ‘Feeling of Emptiness’.
For this reason, Languishing cannot be fully explained by ‘major depression’ or burnout, which is a mood disorder, because individuals do not have either the lack of energy in burnout or the feeling of hopelessness in depression. Languishing is a short- or long-term restlessness felt in daily routines. According to Corey Cesey, a scientist, individuals experiencing languishing are very likely to experience Major Depression if they do not adopt a coping method of their own, because this state of restlessness that threatens mental health also leads to lack of motivation and difficulty focusing.
So, what can we do about this?
‘Staying in the moment’ may be the antidote to Languishing. Staying in the moment means being in the same place physically and spiritually. In the early days of the pandemic, the best indicator of well-being was not optimism or awareness, but the ability to stay in the moment. Here and now; Capturing time, space, and feelings of self can be a meaningful challenge in dealing with Languishing. Focusing on the breath and the body is one of the most important ways to stay in the moment.
Besides, we now know that the most important factor in our positive emotions and motivation is the feeling of progress. The way to achieve this feeling is through small wins. Small challenges that develop skills and increase determination support internal motivation. Another way to support our internal motivation is to eliminate distractions. In this way, it may be easier to step into the goals in our lives.
